UNC Football: Andre Smith traded to the Buffalo Bills
After it appeared as if he would be released, the former UNC football standout has been traded to the AFC East.
The Carolina Panthers originally announced that they would waive former Tar Heel Andre Smith. However, just before placing him on waivers, a trade fell into place.
Carolina announced that they traded Smith to the Buffalo Bills, and in return the Panthers will receive a 2023 conditional late-round draft pick.
Smith was selected in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Panthers. After earning a spot on the team’s active roster, Smith made himself valuable by showing his ability to play special teams. In 2019, Smith played in two-thirds of the Panthers’ special team snaps, and appeared in all 16 contests.
As teams are look to trim their rosters, however, the Panthers decided to part ways with the 23-year-old linebacker. However, he’ll have an opportunity to earn a role with the Bills, as they swooped in at the last minute to trade for the former UNC standout
With less than two weeks until the season opener, Smith won’t have much time to earn an active roster spot. Although time is limited, Smith’s special teams experience may be the reason that the Bills decide to keep him around.
