UNC Basketball: Armando Bacot: “We Want to Play”
In a recent interview, the UNC basketball standout voiced his opinion on the upcoming college basketball season.
As the COVID-19 virus continues to impact our world, upcoming sports still have a possibility of being impacted. The focus now is on fall sports, particularly college football. However, plans are already being discussed to find the best possible ways to move along with the upcoming winter sports season.
Roy Williams and the Tar Heels are preparing as they normally would for their upcoming campaign. Sure, guidelines are in place to promote safe social distancing and health procedures, but the program is still focused on the ultimate goal.
Regardless of when and how the season starts, rising sophomore big man Armando Bacot says the Tar Heels will be ready to play.
Recently, Bacot was a guest on ESPN Radio’s Packer and Durham show. When asked about the season, Bacot stated that he hopes they are able to play at least two-thirds of the regular season along with the NCAA Tournament.
When asked if a later start to the season would be okay, here is what Bacot had to say on the matter:
"“Yeah, that would definitely be okay with us. We want to play this season. It doesn’t matter when, we just want a season.”"
After missing out on an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament last season, it isn’t a surprise to see Bacot wanting to get the chance to play on college basketball’s biggest stage.
In the interview, the forward is speaking on behalf of the Tar Heels. However, his viewpoint on a potential season is shared by many, as the student-athletes are just looking for a chance to compete.
As the next few weeks roll along, we will definitely get more answers in regards to a winter season. The main objective remains clear: find a way for the student athletes to compete in a safe manner while allowing the students to continue their academic course loads in the process.
