After a stellar freshman campaign, Sam Howell represents UNC Football on this top-50 players list.

Last season, Sam Howell exploded onto the scene in Chapel Hill. He quickly became a star among the college football ranks as he provided a huge spark for the Tar Heels’ offense.

Heading into his sophomore season, there is a ton of hype surrounding the Tar Heels’ signal caller. After an incredible freshman campaign, everyone is excited to see what Howell has in store for year two. Could he potentially compete for the Heisman Trophy at some point over the next few seasons? Will he be the guy to lead the Tar Heels to the College Football Playoff? Only time will tell.

As we prepare for college football, 247Sports ranked their top 50 players heading into the new season. Of course, Howell is representing the Tar Heels on the list. He ranks No. 11 overall on the list, and is the third-ranked quarterback, trailing Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (No. 1 Overall) and NDSU’s Trey Lance (No. 10 Overall).

Here’s what the 247Sports rankings article had to say about the Tar Heels quarterback:

"You’ll notice Lawrence’s section above does not include any national record exploits from his freshman season. There’s a reason for that … Howell already broke them, finishing his freshman season with 3,641 yards and 38 touchdowns, the most ever for a true freshman, against just seven interceptions. He injected life into a North Carolina offense that jumped 52nd the year prior to 19th in yards per play. Howell is the nation’s top sophomore quarterback entering the 2020 season, and he looks like a potential Heisman candidate for a UNC team with a great shot to win the ACC Coastal."

It’s definitely an exciting time for the UNC Football program. Mack Brown and crew have done a nice job of making the program relevant again. With one of the best signal-callers in the country and a roster that continues to add talent yearly, the Tar Heels could be a force to be reckoned with in the very near future.
