The UNC Football recruiting class climbed up after landing a big commitment from a five-star defensive back on Tuesday

Mack Brown and his UNC Football staff landed the program’s highest-rated recruit in over 10 years when five-star defensive back Tony Grimes pledged his verbal commitment to the team on Tuesday night.

The addition of Grimes gives UNC 17 commitments in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings, an incredible start to the 2021 class for the Tar Heels. Grimes is the highest-rated recruit in UNC’s class and with his commitment, it helped boost up the Tar Heels’ ranking.

UNC entered Tuesday’s decision ranked No. 4 among all teams in the 247 Sports Composite rankings and now with the addition of Grimes, they have moved up one spot.

The Tar Heels trail just Clemson and Ohio State in the entire country in the updated rankings after the Grimes commit. That’s pretty impressive.

While there is still a long way to go until the class wraps up with National Signing Day, UNC’s class has the chance to move up or finish in the Top 10 this year. Four-star quarterback Drake Maye, four-star linebacker RaRa Dillworth and four-star defensive end Keeshawn Silver are all candidates to reach that fifth star.

If one moves up to that fifth star, it would have a big impact on how UNC’s class finishes overall this cycle. Add in a few more commitments down the line and the Tar Heels are in great shape moving forward. This could end up being one of their best classes ever in Chapel Hill.
