The UNC Football program lands a huge recruit on Tuesday afternoon as five-star defensive back Tony Grimes picked the Tar Heels

It happened! After a week or so of speculation, the UNC Football program has landed their big fish in the recruiting cycle on Tuesday. Five-star defensive back Tony Grimes  officially offered his verbal commitment to North Carolina, a big get for Mack Brown and his staff.

Grimes announced his commitment on CBS Sports HQ, revealing to the nation where he will be attending college. He picked the Tar Heels over Texas A&M, Georgia and Ohio State, giving the Tar Heels a much-needed recruiting win.

With Brown and his staff building an impressive 2021 recruiting class, they have finally landed their big commitment in a five-star recruit. Not only is Grimes a five-star prospect but he’s one of the top players in the entire class.

Grimes is ranked No. 7 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings, No. 1 at his position and No. 1 in the state of Virginia. He’s the first five-star commitment to the Tar Heels’ football program since defensive end Donte Moss in 2009.

By adding Grimes, the Tar Heels now have 17 players committed in the 2021 recruiting cycle and a top 5 class overall. The class is headlined by Grimes as the five-star but quarterback prospect Drake Maye could soon join him with his fifth star.

Other big recruits include four-star defensive end Keeshawn Silver, four-star receiver Gavin Blackwell, four-star linebacker RaRa Dillworth and four-star defensive end Jahvaree Ritzie, all who are ranked in the Top 150. They are also still in the running for a few more top recruits and could add even more to their class.
