UNC women’s basketball program is among five finalists for 5-star class of 2021 prospect

In her first season with the North Carolina women’s basketball program, head coach Courtney Banghart led the Tar Heels to just their second winning campaign over the past five years. Despite getting off to a good start, however — one that included nine consecutive wins to begin the season — the Tar Heels flamed out during Atlantic Coast Conference play. They lost their final eight contests, and finished the 2019-20 season just two games over .500.

The Tar Heels bid farewell to a number of key players on last year’s squad, including Taylor Koenen, Madinah Muhammad and Shayla Bennett. The trio of guards played a big role last season, particularly on the offensive end of the court. And while Banghart and company didn’t get much time on the recruiting trail to work on their 2020 class, the Tar Heels are bringing in a talented group of freshman to help replace the exodus of star players from last season.

The Tar Heels’ 2021 class, on the other hand, will be one that Banghart gets plenty of time to work on, and it has a chance to be very special. North Carolina already got a commitment from 5-star wing Teonni Key, who gave her verbal pledge to the program on Saturday. She’s ranked 22nd overall in the class, and picked UNC over schools such as Auburn, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, NC State, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

More good news came just the day before, when 5-star point guard Kayla McPherson named North Carolina among five finalists in her recruitment. A 5-foot-7 senior from Madison County High School, McPherson is ranked No. 15 overall, and third among players at her position in the 2021 class according to ESPN. The Tar Heels will be battling the likes of Arizona, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and NC State McPherson’s commitment, one that we don’t have an exact timeline on at this point.
