Where does the UNC Basketball program stand with this five-star shooting guard in the 2021 recruiting class? They have some ground to make up

The recruitment for five-star shooting guard Trevor Keels is starting to heat up with several programs targeting the talented 2021 recruit.

During this dead period, Keels has held virtual meetings with a few of the programs that have offered him, including North Carolina, UCONN, Villanova and Virginia. With a total of 17 offers in his recruitment, Keels is drawing interest from a lot of top programs.

The No. 18 overall player in the 247 Sports composite rankings hasn’t cut his list of schools down yet, showing no signs of committing early in this 2021 cycle. He could decide in the Fall or possibly shock everyone and indeed commit early on. We just don’t know.

However, Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans talked about Keels’ recruitment in his Wednesday leftovers article as he offered his insight on who might be in the lead to land him. While it appears that an in-state program sits as the favorite right now, the Tar Heels are still in the mix.

Here is what Evans said on Keels:

"There was some talk that Trevor Keels was close to a commitment last week, but that didn’t happen. I am not sure if Keels will wait until the fall to decide, but I do believe that Villanova is in a good spot, as is Virginia. Duke, North Carolina and Ohio State are three others in the picture."

Keels has taken a few visits in his recruitment, going to Virginia back in September and Duke in March, but since then it’s been pretty quiet. That could be bad news for programs like UNC, Ohio State, and UCONN as they hope to land the talented guard.

The Tar Heels did contact Keels last week via video conference but right now, there might not be a lot of momentum on their side to land him. It’s safe to say that they do have some ground to make up.
