UNC Basketball: Former Tar Heel Coby White does it AGAIN!
Former UNC basketball star Coby White scored 30-plus points for the third consecutive game, and did something that no NBA rookie has ever done before.
Chicago Bulls rookie point guard Coby White notched a new career-high in points against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night, and accomplished something that no other NBA rookie has before.
White became the first player in league history to score 30 or more points off the bench in three consecutive games in his rookie season. He scored 33 points in back-to-back games against the Suns and Wizards over the weekend, setting and then tying his career-high on Saturday and Sunday. He followed that up with 35 points against the Thunder, knocking down 13-of-21 shots from the floor and 6-of-9 from three-point range. He also hit all three of his free throw attempts, while pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out three assists to just one turnover.
On Sunday, White became the first Bulls rookie to record back-to-back 30-point games since, Michael Jordan. He joined Trae Young and Allen Iverson as the only rookies to record consecutive games of 33 or more points since 1992. He also became the first rookie to score 30-plus points off the bench in two straight games. Now, though, White stands alone as the only rookie in NBA history to score at least 30 points in back-to-back-to-back games.
White also set a new personal best against the Thunder when he hit 13 shots from the floor. His previous best was 11, which he did in each of the team’s two previous games. Over his last three outings, White is shooting 35-of-61 from the floor, 18-of-31 from beyond the arc and 13-of-14 from the foul line.
He’s averaging a career-best 17.7 points per game in the month of February, and has scored double-digit points in seven of the team’s eight games this month. Unfortunately for White and the Bulls, Chicago has lost all but one of those games, including Tuesday night’s 124-122 defeat to OKC.
White wasn’t involved in any of the league’s midseason All-Star festivities for rookies, but he’s definitely making his case as one of the most promising young players in the league.
