UNC Basketball: Who is next to commit to Tar Heels?
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program is hoping to add more five-stars to their 2020 recruiting class after getting a commitment from Walker Kessler
There was excitement in Chapel Hill late Sunday night as five-star center Walker Kessler informed the Tar Heels that he was committing to the program just a few hours after his official visit had ended. Kessler made the decision to commit with a post on his Instagram, informing Roy Williams and his staff.
The addition of Kessler gives UNC two five-star centers in the class as Day’Ron Sharpe was the first prospect to commit. It’s an impressive start for Williams and now the Tar Heels have the potential of finishing with a “monster” class in 2020 that could include a few more five-star recruits.
As we head into a weekend filled with some big visits for Late Night With Roy, the Tar Heels might be in good shape to add at least two more five-star players at minimum. They have the depth in the front court now but they still need to fill some voids in the back court.
Among those targets for the Tar Heels that could help are five-stars Cade Cunningham, Caleb Love, Bryce Thompson, Ziaire Williams, Greg Brown and Earl Timberlake. Each would provide some depth on the wing that the Tar Heels will need following the 2019-20 campaign.
Love just took his official visit to Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels appear to be one of the favorites for the point guard. They are also not out of the race for the No. 2 overall player, guard Cade Cunningham.
Rivals recruiting analyst Eric Bossi talked about the Tar Heels’ possible targets and where they may stand, saying some interesting things about both Love and Cunningham:
"Five-star point guard Caleb Love was on campus with Kessler and the Heels are right at the top of, if not leading, his list. If Cade Cunningham doesn’t go to Oklahoma State, the Heels appear to be in the best position for the No. 2 player in the class. Five-star guard Bryce Thompson is still seriously in the mix as are five-star wingsGreg Brown, Earl Timberlake and Ziaire Williams. Also on the horizon are top 50 players like Puff Johnson whose older brother played at UNC. The bottom line here is that UNC has loaded up their front court and given the way things are trending, it’s hard to see them not landing at least one or two more of their primary targets and putting together a monster class."
The most likely case for the Tar Heels is landing the point guard Love along with Williams on the wing. Williams has already set another visit for UNC as he will be on campus for Late Night With Roy this weekend. The Tar Heels are rumored to be the favorites to land both which makes the most sense right now.
But as always, anything can change in recruitments and we just saw a surprise one in Kessler over the weekend.
