The UNC Basketball program gets big news on Sunday night as a five-star center in the 2020 class has officially committed

The North Carolina Tar Heels have added to their 2020 recruiting class in a big way.

Just hours after his official visit to North Carolina ended on Sunday, five-star center Walker Kessler announced that he will be a Tar Heel. The Georgia product officially committed to UNC per 247 Sports lead recruiting analyst Evan Daniels, making that decision late Sunday night.

The Tar Heels were able to beat out fellow finalists Duke, Michigan, Gonzaga, Arizona, and Cal to land him. Many thought the Blue Devils were the favorites in his recruitment, taking a visit to Durham in early September and Michigan in August.

But when it came time for the Tar Heels to host, they won him over.

Kessler has spent the past three day on campus for his official visit along with five-star point guard Caleb Love. The two were hosted by a group of basketball players, taking in a football game in the afternoon and hanging out with players and meeting with coaches the rest of the time.

When it was all said and done, UNC just made sense for Kessler and he wasted no time committing.

The commitment of Kessler gives UNC their second five-star recruit in the 2020 class as he joins fellow center Day’Ron Sharpe. With both centers committed, Kessler will likely play the role of power forward as he has better range on the offensive game.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pound Kessler has excellent range for a big man giving UNC a big scoring option in the paint as well as allowing him to play outside if needed. He’s ranked as the No. 15 overall recruit in the 247 Sports’ rankings and now bumps the Tar Heels up inside the  Top 10 for team rankings.

Going into his recruitment, it was thought that the Duke Blue Devils were the front runners to land Kessler and that UNC would have to do an excellent job on this visit. It appears as if they did and won out in the end.
