UNC Basketball: Tar Heels trending for five-star guard?
By Zack Pearson
Where does the UNC Basketball program stand with a five-star point guard in the 2020 recruiting class? One analyst believes they are the favorites..
It’s not a secret that the North Carolina Tar Heels would love to add a few wings to their 2020 recruiting class.
With Cole Anthony likely being a one-and-done player following 2019, the Tar Heels will have just Anthony Harris, Rechon “Leaky” Black and Jeremiah Francis on the wing for them in the 2020-21 season. Roy Williams and his staff have offers out to a few players on the wing they’d love to reel in and add to the class that currently has five-star center Day’Ron Sharpe verbally committed.
But where they stand with each one is a different story.
For five-star point guard Caleb Love, he had a total of 26 offers in his recruitment before narrowing his list to six. The Missouri native included four teams in his top six with just Arizona and UNC being the ones not located in that region. Following that, Love announced five official visits including one to UNC on September 20th.
As for the Tar Heels’ chances, one recruiting analyst loves where they are at in Love’s recruitment and even went as far as saying they were a co-favorite. Rival’s recruiting analyst Corey Evans broke down the recruitment in his Twitter Tuesday mailbag after being asked about Love and if he will take all of his visits or not.
Here is part of what Evans had to say about the recruitment:
"Love is in no rush to end his recruitment, though. He has a little bit of leverage on his side thanks to his talent level, the dearth of available prospects in his mold, and that a few of the programs recruiting him need more than one guard commitment this fall, so don’t expect for a rush decision.Could Missouri, which has some momentum in its favor, keep things going and win out with Love? I am not willing to bet on it just yet. While Indiana and Kansas are fighting their way into the picture, Louisville and North Carolina might be the two leaders heading into September, a month that he will visit four of his finalists before completing things at KU on Oct. 13."
The Tar Heels will get the third visit out of the five that are scheduled, with Arizona being left out of the mix. Following the UNC visit, he heads to Louisville and then Kansas.
While Evans says the recruit is in no hurry to end his recruitment, we have to imagine a commitment will come in 2019 after he takes all of his visits. If UNC can impress him on that September 20th visit, they may just be the ones to pull him out of the Midwest.
