UNC basketball program extends scholarship offer to 5-star prospect, the second in three days to the class of 2021

Roy Williams was just two days removed from his first scholarship offer to the class of 2021 — that designation goes to 5-star big man Paolo Banchero — when he added a second on Wednesday.

The Tar Heels’ latest 2021 target is Patrick Baldwin Jr., a 6-foot-8, 190-pound junior at Hamilton High School in Sussex, Wisconsin. A 5-star prospect and No. 2 overall in the class, Baldwin is second among small forwards and No. 1 in the state of Wisconsin.

Baldwin has over 20 scholarship offers already, including ones from Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kansas State, LSU, Marquette, Michigan, Missouri, UCLA and Wisconsin. Baldwin announced his latest offer from the University of North Carolina via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday evening.

247Sports national basketball analyst Brian Snow has compared Baldwin to Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Klay Thompson, and projects him to be a first round NBA draft pick in a couple of years. He’s also had several chances to watch Baldwin play, and had this to say about the consensus top-5 prospect’s game:

"“Has great length and an excellent frame to add weight,” Snow writes. “At 6-foot-8, can play either forward spot and he has the ability to be a weapon from beyond the arc. There aren’t many prospects who have the combination of skill, basketball IQ, size, and athleticism. Has gotten significantly better off the dribble, and it is easy to see why he is one of the premier prospects in the class of 2021. From an NBA perspective he has not only significant 3 and D potential as a forward, but his athleticism is getting better – which could mean future star status if everything continues to come together. Add in that he is a son of a coach who has been around the game his whole life, and Baldwin checks nearly every box you could want out of a prospect. Looks like he will develop into an NBA lottery pick.”"

Baldwin averaged 16.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 17 games on the grassroots circuit this season. He played alongside class of 2020 Duke commit Jalen Johnson, and a host of other talented players.

Don’t look for Baldwin’s recruitment to end any time soon, and don’t count on his list of scholarships to stay where it’s currently at. He could easily have twice as many offers by the time it’s all said and done, which could potentially be nearly two years from now.
