By Zack Pearson
Former UNC Basketball standout Cameron Johnson has met with the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of the 2019 NBA Draft in June
While the Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks both took 2-0 leads in their conference finals, some of the biggest storylines in the NBA last week revolved around the 2019 NBA Draft.
On Tuesday, the official order was revealed for the lottery with the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies both moving up into the Top 2. Following the lottery, the annual Draft Combine was held in Chicago with prospects getting their chance to meet with prospects ahead of June’s draft.
The North Carolina Tar Heels sent three players to the 2019 NBA Draft Scouting Combine as Coby White, Cameron Johnson and Nassir Little. We already broke down the latest mock drafts for White, who is being most mocked to Chicago, Phoenix and Atlanta.
While White is projected to be a lottery pick and Little on the edge of the lottery, Johnson is being mocked around selection No. 20 in the first round. One of those teams that could be interested are the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 76ers hold pick No. 24 in the upcoming draft and they are already showing interest in one of UNC’s best shooters from recent past. Following the lottery, Sports Illustrated mocked Johnson to the 76ers at No. 24
According to Philly.com, General Manager Elton Brand had a meeting with Johnson while at the draft combine this past week:
"His age could work in the Sixers’ favor. That’s because he could be available when they select at No. 24 in the draft. The team also has four second-round picks, Nos. 33, 34, 42 and 54.Johnson, who has relatives in Philly and Blackwood, N.J., is one of the players they’re considering at No. 24. He met with Sixers general manager Elton Brand and his front office here at the NBA draft combine on Thursday.“It went really good,” Johnson said of his interview. “It was encouraging. … It was really good conversation.”"
Johnson played at Pitt for the first three years of his college career before joining the Tar Heels as a graduate transfer. He spent two seasons with the Tar Heels and had his big breakout year last season.
As a graduate senior, Johnson averaged 16.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists, all career highs for the forward. In addition, Johnson shot 50.6 percent from the field which was among the best in the entire country.
