Roy Williams makes some history with UNC’s big 88-72 win over Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night

University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams just picked up one of his biggest wins of the year as the Tar Heels took down No. 1 Duke on the road Wednesday night.

Williams and his Tar Heels dominated the paint from the start, scoring 62 of their 88 points in the paint with the absence of Zion Williamson. Once the five-star forward left the game early, Duke was shell-shocked and had no answer for UNC.

The Tar Heels were able to take advantage of that and Williams coached what I believe was one of his best games of the season. He out-coached Mike Krzyzewski and the Tar Heels got the much-needed win to tie up the ACC standings.

But with Williams’ win over No. 1 Duke on Wednesday night, he set a new NCAA record in the process.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Williams now has 8 wins over the No. 1-ranked team in the AP Top 25 passing former Maryland coach Gary Williams for most all time.

Of those eight wins, five of them have come while being the head coach at UNC and 3 in his time with Kansas.

This was the first win over a No. 1 team for Williams since 2013 when the Tar Heels beat Michigan State on the road in the ACC Big Ten Challenge. He also did it in 2006 at Duke, the 2005 National Championship Game vs. Illinois and in 2004 against UConn.

The head coach has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in the game, winning three National Championships, all with UNC. He will look to win his fourth this year but first, the Tar Heels have to take care of some business in the ACC and NCAA Tournament seeding.
