UNC Basketball: Vernon Carey Jr. sets in-home visit
By Zack Pearson
One of the top prospects in the 2019 recruiting class, Vernon Carey Jr., will host coaches for in-home visits next week
Sunday is not only Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season but it will also mark the start of the new contact period for college basketball recruiting. College coaches are allowed again to contact recruits as they gear up for the 2018-19 High School basketball season.
On Wednesday we told you about one in-home visit set for North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams when he’s expected to meet with five-star power forward Matthew Hurt sometime next week. But now we can add another in-home to the list.
According to Rivals reporter Corey Evans, five-star forward Vernon Carey Jr. has set some in-home visits for next week. Carey Jr.’s list consists of five finalists: UNC, Duke, Michigan State, Kentucky and Miami as he plans on not only taking his remaining four official visits, but hosting all five programs for in-home visits.
His week will begin with a visit from Miami on Sunday, followed by Duke on Sept. 10, Kentucky on Sept. 11, Michigan State on Sept. 12 and finally UNC on Sept. 13th.
Much like the official visits, the Tar Heels will get the final in-home visit of the week from the five-star recruit. We don’t know if that’s a good sign or a bad one but it could mean something.
Carey Jr.’s recruitment has been an interesting one with Duke, Michigan State and in-home Miami reportedly being the three favorites to land him. But as of the Summer, both UNC and Kentucky have come on strong.
Williams has made Carey Jr. a priority, making sure he’s watched most of his games during the July open evaluation period. Carey Jr. made that a point to note when updating his recruitment to reporters.
Carey Jr. will take four official visits this Fall and could have another one back to Michigan State due to new NCAA rules. Don’t expect a decision to be made before the early signing period as he will likely announce sometime in 2019.
