Roy Williams extends offer to elite 2019 wing

After missing out on a couple of elite 2018 prospects in E.J. Montgomery and Ashton Hagans (2019 prospect likely reclassifying to 2018), North Carolina head coach Roy Williams has shifted his focus to the class of 2019 and beyond.

Over the past few days, Williams has extended scholarship offers to five-star prospects in the classes of 2019 and 2020. Class of 2019 power forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl was the recipient of one of the scholarship offers, and 2020 big man Day’Ron Sharpe was the other.

On Tuesday, Williams extended a scholarship offer to Keion Brooks, a five-star small forward from the class of 2019. The offer came as no surprise, though, after recent contact between the two parties.

North Carolina assistant coach Hubert Davis called Brooks last week to introduce himself and notify him of the Tar Heels’ interest. He and Williams followed that up by spending a substantial amount of time evaluating Brooks at last weekend’s Nike EYBL session in Indianapolis.

Then came the offer a few days later, officially putting the Tar Heels in the running for the talented wing out of North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He averaged 22.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as a junior, gaining the attention of coaches and scouts.

A 6-foot-8, 185-pound small forward, Brooks is currently the No. 28 prospect in the class of 2019 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the eighth-ranked player at his position and the No. 3 prospect in the state of Indiana.

It’s still early in his recruitment, but Brooks already holds offers from Florida State, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Memphis, Missouri, North Carolina State, UCLA, Xavier and a handful of other big name programs.

And while there may not be a clear leader at this point in his recruitment, Brooks has stated that he grew up liking Kentucky and recognizes John Calipari’s track record for helping young players reach their goals of playing in the NBA.
