UNC might have an edge in the race for 2018 prospect Zamir White

The North Carolina Tar Heels added to their 2018 football recruiting class with four commitments last week.

It’s a nice start for Larry Fedora and his staff as they look to build on their 2017 class that hits campus this year.

With the 2018 class being an important one due to recent graduations and players leaving early, the Tar Heels have to score a big class. Getting that big class and recruit could come in the form of running back Zamir White.

The five-star back is the top running back in the 2018 class and has the Tar Heels listed in his top schools. White is down to UNC, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama and Clemson with the Bulldogs reportedly being the favorites.

But don’t count out the Tar Heels just yet.

White’s high school coach, Richard Baily, recently spoke to Vsporto’s SEC Buzz podcast to offer some insight on his recruiting and it’s good news for UNC fans.

"“I would say that North Carolina has kind of picked up momentum,” Bailey said via Carolina Blue. “If you had asked me 3-4 months ago, I would have said North Carolina probably did not have a very good chance at all, now I would say their chances are on the other end of the spectrum.”"

Before the comment, Bailey also said he thinks White is has a good idea of where he’s going to go and is working through the process.

White has been on UNC’s campus the past two weekends, including Saturday for the annual Fedora’s Freak Show event.

The Tar Heels are the last program to meet with White face-to-face, making one last run at the recruit.

White is currently the sixth-best prospect overall in the 2018 class and the top running back.

A commitment from White would move UNC’s 31st-ranked class up the rankings. More importantly, it would give them their future at the position.

With Elijah Hood and T.J. Logan gone, UNC will have an open competition in 2017. They welcome freshman Antwuan Branch and Michael Carter, as well as graduate transfer Stanton Truitt.

Former linebacker Johnathon Sutton is also making the switch to running back.

That leaves sophomore Jordan Brown as the only running back on the roster with experience in the Tar Heels backfield.

White would be a candidate to start right away if he does pick UNC.
