UNC Baseball: Two Tar Heels win ACC awards
The Tar Heels have had a lot of success this season. The Diamond Heels are part of that success and look to be just getting started thanks to the help of two ACC award winners.
Things just keep getting better for the Diamond Heels.
First they clinched the Coastal Division last week and then hey finished with the two seed in the ACC tournament after winning 44 games on the season.
As the ACC Tournament is set to being on Tuesday and the Tar Heels will open on Wednesday against Boston College. That’s the next step in the Tar Heels getting to Omaha.
But before the tournaments begin, a few awards were handed out and two Tar Heels players were on the receiving end.
First, it was announced that J.B. Bukauskas won ACC pitcher of the year for his fantastic season with the Tar Heels:
Bukauskas is 8-0 this season with a 1.87 ERA. He has started 13 games and has 106 strikeouts in just 82 innings pitched. He’s issued only 31 walks and given up only six home runs on the season.
The right-hander leads the team in almost every starting pitching category this season. Keith Law currently has him going sixth overall to the Oakland A’s in his latest mock draft.
Next, Ashton McGee was named ACC Freshman of the year.
Ashton McGee has been a great addition for the Diamond Heels. This season he has 64 hits in 189 at bats for a .339 batting average, best on the team. He also had 39 runs batted in as well as six home runs, nine doubles, and a triple.
In addition to the best batting average, McGee also had the best on base percentage on the team by drawing a team high 32 walks.
Things are going well for the Tar Heels as a whole.
This year alone they have won the men’s basketball championship. The Men’s tennis team just made their first ever final four.
The men’s program as a whole just sits 10 points behind Stanford in the Capital One Cup. A couple of more championships and this could end up being an even better finish for the Tar Heels.
Next: Diamond Heels end season on a roll
With two outstanding players on this years team, there is no reason these Diamond Heels can’t make a run for Omaha.
If they do, it will just be another feather in the cap of this already great Tar Heel year.
