March Madness: Ranking mascots in the East Region
5. Wolfie the Seawolf (Stony Brook)
First of all, Wolfie gets points for being based on a mystical creature. There is only one seawolf in division I basketball and this is it. Plus he has some cool dance moves as shown in the video below. However, they lose points for unoriginality of name. Wolfie really? The Seawolf would’ve been more creative. They also lose points for looking too much like any other wolf or wildcat for that matter. If you are going to be the seawolves and your mascot isn’t sea green, you should go home and try again.
4. Scrappy the Mockingbird (Chattanooga)
Honestly I didn’t know what a Moc was until I looked it up and found that is was short for Mockingbird. Of course it wasn’t always this way. First Mocs was short for Moccasins and the water moccasin was it’s mascot. Then they jumped on the Native American bandwagon. So Chattanooga gains points for moving away from attempting to defraud a proud culture (looking at you FSU and the professional Washington football team).
Unfortunately birds rank up there with Wildcats as Eagles are everywhere. However, the Mockingbird is the state bird of Tennessee. Plus they have worked the train theme in at times, relating the school back to what the town is known for, the Chattanooga Choo Choo.
3. Nitro (Fairleigh Dickinson)
It is a shame that Fairleigh Dickinson lost last night, because Nitro is one cool mascot. Not only his he a horse (using the knight theme for chess), but he is a blue horse with a red Mane. Sorry that is just cool. Maybe it is because it reminds me of some cartoon show from the 80’s but Nitro is definitely one of the best non major mascots in the sport and for that matter one of the best in college basketball period. If only the team he represented was as overpowering as he is.
