Controversial shirt aside, Larry Fedora had a bad day.
Let’s start with the Heels picking up 15 penalties. Read that again, real quick. Fifteen penalties. To put that in perspective, Clemson had four. Clemson gave up just 19 yards on penalties. Carolina gave up 130. On a night when the other team is pretty much scoring at will, giving them 130 free yards on penalties is not a very good idea.
Also, the types of penalties the Heels picked up was ridiculous. The five false start penalties and two personal foul penalties were especially egregious. It was painful to watch.

Also, the horrendous blown coverage assignments fall on the coaches. If it had just been one or two missed assignments, then that’s just a player messing up. But for there to be so many missed assignments shows a lack of preparedness. The coaches need to do a better job getting their players ready for the game.
On the bright side, UNC didn’t quit this week. They stayed in the game and kept battling, and even made it interesting at the end. That is a huge improvement after last week, when some of the players said that the Heels had quit.
Carolina will face another tough opponent in Virginia Tech on Saturday. Hopefully Fedora and defensive coordinator Vic Koenig can get the defense going by then.
