As expected UNC started out a bit sluggish in their second straight contest of the year.  To be fair the first game was on an air carrier in San Diego and today’s game was 2 days later all the way back in North Carolina.  UNC took a 10-1 run late in the 1st half to lead 48-39, still they let a much weaker UNC Ash. team stick around too much in the first half.  It’s early but this team is looking more like the 2008 UNC team than the 09 team which came out of the gates crushing people.

The difference really is that everyone on this team doesn’t have their roles down, nor is Roy Williams rotation completely settled.  Williams usually likes to play a lot of players early, giving his veterans some minutes off versus lesser opponents while giving his younger players a look and ultimately settling on a rotation.

The rest of my game observations and wrap up after the jump

James McAdoo looks like a stud in the making and the team may have to play Harrison Barnes at shooting guard more to squeeze him into the lineup for more minutes.  They don’t need to start him but it looks like McAdoo will command big minutes this year, it was puzzling to me that he played so few minutes tonight.  He played well in the opener and looked good with 6 pts and 4 rebounds in just 9 minutes of play tonight.  The only thing that can explain McAdoo’s lack of minutes was the utter dominance by fellow big men Tyler Zeller and John Henson who were great with 27 and and 20 points with 20 rebounds between them.

Reggie Bullock logged 11 minutes and again seemed on his way to 100% though I don’t think he’s there yet, he contributed just 2 points.  Freshman PJ Hairston looked solid once again and may end up being the shooter this team needs to make a run he went 2-3 from the field knocking down 1-2 from down town in 10 minutes of action.

Overall another game, another win and you can’t be too judgmental of 2 consecutive wins by double digits points.  But this should have been a game in which the Heels didn’t have to play all 5 starters 30 plus minutes to ensure a win.  They let a far inferior team hang around for way too long and almost seemed to regress as soon as they made a run every time, refusing to bury the opposition.  Some positives the defense while sluggish in the first half took it to another level in the second.  The front line was dominate, Kendall Marshall showed he is college basketball’s Jason Kidd once again.  Harrison Barnes was efficient but not very assertive on the offensive end, I will continue to beat this drum until he understands that he needs to take the lead for this team and be the superstar from the perimeter in all facets of the game in order to take pressure off the bigs.  He won’t be national player of the year unless he is.

Still the season is young the Heels are 2-0, life is good in Carolina.  This team’s only going to get better and better throughout the year and that’s a scary thought.
