There are few rivalries in all of American sports as highly touted as this one.
Dating back to January 1920, when the North Carolina Tar Heels took on the Duke Blue Devils for the first time, this matchup has cemented itself as one of the best in American sports. Now, 265 meetings later, we have arrived at the first of two matchups in the 2025-26 season, and this one will certainly be special.
On Saturday, the No. 4-ranked Duke Blue Devils will travel to Chapel Hill and take on the No. 14-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in what will be a battle that will likely come down to the wire. Once again, the world of college basketball will be reminded of why this rivalry stands alone as the greatest in the nation.
Few rivalries across America carry the same kind of weight. What separates Carolina-Duke from the rest of the field is the sustained, elite level of excellence that has historically come from each program. Both programs sit among the top in the history books, with North Carolina the third-most-winning program in college basketball and Duke fourth. North Carolina also leads the nation in final four appearances with 21, while Duke follows behind in second with 18. (See a trend here?)
In an all-time series, North Carolina leads 145-120, though Duke has chipped away in recent years, sitting on a three-game win streak. Still, the Tar Heels' edge in the competition speaks volumes to their consistency at putting on a show when Duke comes to town.
Name another rivalry that carries this much weight and can match this level of sustained, championship-caliber success.
You can’t.
And those campuses? They're only separated by about ten miles. Few top rivalries have the history, proximity, and success that this one has. The proximity between the two campuses adds yet another layer of intensity to a game that is already drowning in it.
This year’s edition brings another compelling storyline as we see two NBA lottery picks going head-to-head. Caleb Wilson matched up against Duke’s star freshman Cameron Boozer will be a sight to see. Wilson has been absolutely amazing all year long, while Boozer has been carrying the legacy of his last name at Duke all year.
Duke enters with a winning streak we hope ends Saturday night. UNC has a golden opportunity to flip the script and send Duke home with a loss in front of a loud Dean Dome crowd.
No matter the records, or the players, or the coaches, or the circumstances, you can always bet that Duke/UNC will deliver. The games are filled with momentum swings, physical battles, hostile crowds, and finishes that usually come down to the final seconds.
That's what makes this rivalry the gold standard—it never disappoints, it always delivers, and it continues to showcase the very best of what college basketball has to offer. This isn’t just a rivalry; it's an intense battle year after year between the best of the best.
The first chapter of the gold standard rivalry is almost here, and, as Jay Bilas says, "it always delivers."
