There will be a new name added to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Defensive end Greg Ellis is the name.
Per GoHeels, Ellis is one of 11 people to join the prestigious group of North Carolina athletics.
"Tar Heel legend Greg Ellis will be a part of the 2025 induction class for the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the organization announced on Tuesday. Ellis will be joined in the class by Nora Lynn Finch, Rollie Geiger, David Gentry, Dale Inman, Bobby Isaac, Cullen Jones, Chester McGlockton, Wendy Palmer, Jimmy Raye and Miles Wolff."
When reading about Ellis' stats during his time as a Tar Heel, it makes sense as to exactly why he is Hall of Fame worthy — even named consensus All-American back in 1997.
"A consensus All-American in 1997, Ellis racked up 244 tackles, 32.5 sacks and 50 TFL during his UNC career. His 32.5 sacks are a program record, while his 50 TFL rank third in school history. Ellis was a two-time captain, a three-time first-team All-ACC performer, and an Academic All-ACC selection. He is one of just four Tar Heels in program history to earn first-team All-ACC honors three times."
Following his career in Chapel Hill, Ellis spent 11 seasons playing for the Dallas Cowboys and his final year for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL. By the end of his football career, he finished with 392 SOLOs, 84 sacks, 23 FFs and four interceptions.
Not too shabby.
Ellis, 49-years-old, is the assistant defensive line coach of the Cowboys — keeping him around the game he's played for the majority of his life.
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is a well-deserved achievement to have after spending four years productive years at the college level.
With the Bill Belichick era beginning, will Carolina fans watch a potential inductee in front of their own eyes?
The chances of this happening are not impossible but since Belichick is head coach, it's not going to be zero.
