Bill Belichick and the UNC Football program have been completely rejuvenating the team this offseason, bringing in talent through the transfer portal and recruiting many elite high school players.
Belichick has also been reinventing the front office and team staff, like welcoming Michael Lombardi, his first staff hire with the program, as the Tar Heels general manager. The newest hire was announced today, as former Oregon staff member Matt Lombardi, Michaels's son, is expected to be an offensive assistant coach for the Tar Heels, potentially as quarterback coach, for the 2025 season.
Before spending the 2024-25 season as an offensive analyst for the Oregon Ducks football team, helping lead them to a No. 1 seed in the college football playoffs, Lombardi spent years with the big dogs in the NFL. Lombardi spent three seasons as an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers and one season with the Las Vegas Raiders and the Miami Dolphins.
Lombardi also has a plethora of college experience, spending two seasons with Baylor as an offensive quality control coach and two seasons with Louisville as an offensive graduate assistant.
Lombardi is another big-time get for the Tar Heels and will now be the second father-son duo on the coaching staff. Steve Belichick, son of Bill Belichick, will be the North Carolina defensive coordinator for the 2025 season.
If any recruits are looking for a family environment throughout their college experience, there's surely no place like Chapel Hill.
