UNC football standout Drake Maye set to meet with multiple teams at NFL Draft Combine
By Austin Owens
While the University of North Carolina begins gearing up for March Madness, former UNC football quarterback Drake Maye turns his attention to the NFL Draft combine on April 25th. After three seasons in Chapel Hill and winning the 2022 ACC Player of the Year, Maye declared for the NFL draft after a short but stellar college career.
Maye has been a hot topic entering the draft season. Some people view him similarly to another former Tar Heel quarterback, Sam Howell. Howell has not lived up to expectations, and many believe Maye will follow suit. Quite a few others feel he may be worthy of being the first quarterback off the board in 2024.
Late Wednesday evening, Ian Rapoport reported that Drake Maye was meeting with “essentially the same teams” as LSU’s Heisman Trophy winner, Jayden Daniels.
These teams include the Atlanta Falcons (8th pick), Chicago Bears (1st pick), Washington Commanders (2nd pick), Minnesota Vikings (11th pick), New York Jets (10th pick), New York Giants (6th pick), New England Patriots (3rd pick), Las Vegas Raiders (13th pick), Seattle Seahawks (16th pick), and New Orleans Saints (14th pick).
After seeing this list, there are a couple of teams that do not seem like the ideal landing spot for the North Carolina quarterback. The Chicago Bears have the number one overall pick and will most likely take USC superstar quarterback Caleb Williams if they choose to end the Justin Fields experiment. Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye are viewed as the next-best quarterback options once Caleb Williams is off the board.
Another team that could very well pass on Maye is the Washington Commanders. The Commanders rolled the dice on Sam Howell, who has not turned out as expected. Washington could very well be one of the organizations that feel Drake Maye is too much of a risk to take a chance on him.
The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine starts February 29th and runs through March 3rd. Over this time, Maye will look to impress many organizations with his skill level and maturity, hoping to leapfrog Caleb Williams and the Heisman winner Jayden Daniels on the draft board.
