UNC Football: 2024 season superlatives for the Tar Heels in the NFL
By Luke Sugar
Javonte Williams had a dynamic rookie season in 2021 and looked to be the future standout of the Broncos backfield. Even while splitting carries with veteran running back Melvin Gordon III, Williams recorded an impressive stat line of seven touchdowns and over 1,200 total yards from scrimmage.
With a powerful 5-foot-10, 225-pound frame, Williams is a ferocious runner. He invites contact, making it his mission to run right through defenders. As just a rookie, Williams had an eye-popping 31 broken tackles — the most in the entire league. He also had 460 total yards after contact, good for the ninth most in the league. You can view one of Williams' monster rookie runs below.
Unfortunately, Williams tore his ACL, LCL, and PLC in his right knee in Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season. But Williams is a gritty guy who won't let anything keep him down, and he has thankfully since made a full recovery. Though last season, Williams looked a little rusty post-injury, he still tallied over 1,000 total yards.
This season, I’m looking for Williams to take the reins of the Broncos backfield and begin his redemption tour — striking fear into defenders, like he did his rookie season.
