UNC Basketball: RJ Davis Meets New Milestone In Win Over Charleston Southern
By Jordan Falls
In case you haven't been paying attention, RJ Davis is playing like the best guard in the COUNTRY across college basketball, and Friday night in Chapel Hill was no different. The UNC Basketball program closed out the 2023 year and the non-conference portion of the 2023-2024 season with a 105-60 win over Charleston Southern.
Once again, Davis led the Tar Heels in scoring, met a milestone that hadn't been met in over a decade, and accomplished something no UNC basketball player has ever done.
Davis racked up an impressive performance against the Buccaneers, scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the game for the Tar Heels on 4-4 shooting from the field. He would end up with 20 points on 7-13 shooting and 3-6 from three-point range. That wasn't all, though; Davis contributed in other ways, getting multiple Tar Heels involved by dishing out 10 assists to zero turnovers.
Davis became the first Tar Heel since Kendall Marshall in 2012 to have a 20-point, 10-assist game. Marshall's 20/10 performance came on March 3rd, 2012, at Duke when North Carolina defeated the Blue Devils 88-70 to claim the ACC Regular Season title.
He wasn't just effective offensively, though, as he even brought the defense versus Charleston Southern as he came up with five steals, making him the first Tar Heel ever to have a 20-point, 10-assist, 5-steal performance in a game. Add in those zero turnovers, and that's one of the most impressive stat lines you will ever see, regardless of performance.
Of course, we all remember when Davis was left off the pre-season All-ACC team. Based on how the first 12 games of the season have gone, it appears Davis is out to prove a point, and he is certainly doing so with the performances he is leaving on the court night in and night out. He is making a case to be on an All-ACC team at the end of the season and also in the ACC Player of the Year and National Player of the Year conversations as well.
