UNC Basketball guard R.J. Davis passes Hubert Davis on the all-time three-point list
Senior shooting guard R.J. Davis entered the UNC basketball program's contest on Tuesday night with 196 three-pointers in his career. He was only one behind his head coach Hubert Davis who knocked down 197 in his four-year career from 1988-1992.
Coach Davis watched his star player break his record against Pittsburgh, going 3-6 from the three-point line and scoring 15 points in the win. Davis failed to reach 20+ points for a ninth-straight game, but this game is one he'll remember for years to come.
One of Davis's three-point shots was a crucial one at the buzzer to give the Tar Heels a 31-28 lead heading into halftime. The lead was monumental for the UNC basketball program because they failed to score a basket in the first six minutes of the game, going 0-10 in that stretch.
Pittsburgh hung onto a 6-0 lead throughout the first media timeout before Davis knocked down a contested three at the top of the key to open up the scoring. After securing the defensive rebound Davis raced up the floor and finished a contested layup to make it a one point game. The scoring boost from their leader helped settle the Tar Heels into the game.
Davis was the second-leading scorer for the UNC basketball program behind Armando Bacot who had 16 points on the night. It wasn't his best shooting night as he went 6-16 from the field and 3-6 from three, but he made shots when his team needed it the most. Davis helped his team remain calm in a tough road environment and secured their first win over Pittsburgh in three seasons. Prior to the game last night, coach Hubert Davis was 0-3 against Pittsburgh in his head coaching career.
It was a memorable game for the UNC basketball program on Tuesday night. Aside from Davis passing his coach on the three-pointers list, senior center Armando Bacot surpassed 2,000 career points, becoming the seventh Tar Heel to do so. Big nights from veterans Bacot and Davis propelled the UNC basketball program to a 2-0 start in league play and their first true road win this season. It won't be long before Davis passes another coach Jeff Lebo for sixth on the list, as he's only 12 three-pointers away.
