UNC Baseball program lands another former Liberty player via the transfer portal
By JT Zangara
Cale Bolton, a 6-foot-5 left-hander who previously pitched for Liberty, has announced his commitment to the UNC baseball program.
The Louisburg, North Carolina native decided to come back home to help the Tar Heels pitching staff, as he could become a valuable resource to help replace some of the pitching talent that the Diamond Heels lost during the recent MLB Draft.
After transferring to Liberty before the 2024 season, Bolton pitched 28.1 innings in 16 appearances in his lone season on campus. He held a 2-2 record while recording 21 strikeouts. Bolton was called upon to start one game last season, in which he allowed just two earned runs over 6.1 innings of work against Louisiana Tech.
Although he will most likely be a reliever for the Diamond Heels, there are plenty of innings to replace on the mound. If Dalton Pence, Shea Sprague, and Aidan Haugh sign with their respective MLB clubs, that's nearly 200 innings that the UNC baseball program will have to divvy up elsewhere. He'll follow his former head coach, Scott Jackson, to Chapel Hill, as you have to expect that Scott Forbes and his staff have a plan in place to make sure that Bolton develops into another impact transfer for the program moving forward.
