The UNC basketball program announced today that the Blue-White Scrimmage, which was scheduled for October 13th at Harrah's Resort in Cherokee, North Carolina, was canceled due to logistical issues related to the recent Hurricane Helene disaster.

Cherokee is about an hour's drive west of Asheville, or at least it used to be. Plot a driving course to Cherokee from Chapel Hill or Charlotte and you'll likely find yourself going through several road closures due to flooding. Suffice it to say, as state officials and FEMA sort this mess out, the last thing they need is a bunch of Tar Heel fans descending on the casino, further clogging roads and taking up scarce resources.

The Blue-White Scrimmage will carry on. The event will be held at the Dean E. Smith Center on campus at Chapel Hill on Saturday October 12. This presents the ultimate opportunity for Tar Heel fans to see two UNC games on the same day. The Georgia Tech football game kicks off at noon. The basketball scrimmage will begin 45 minutes after the end of the football game. You can literally walk from Kenan Stadium to the Dean Dome in 20 minutes.

Students can get into the scrimmage with their One Card. For everyone else, tickets are $10, and those who had tickets for the Harrah's Resort scrimmage will have them honored at the Dean Dome. All proceeds from the Blue-White Scrimmage will go towards hurricane relief efforts. I would encourage any and all North Carolina fans who can go to both games to do so. If the football game makes you sad or angry, the basketball scrimmage will surely make you smile. If the bitterness of another football disaster makes a frown you can't turn upside down, then at least you'll be helping your neighbors in western North Carolina get back on their feet.

Bottom line: you have a chance to see two Tar Heel programs in one day. You'll pay for parking once. You'll get to see some awesome debuts from McDonald's All-American freshmen and impact transfers. And you'll put good energy and kindness into the world when it needs it most. Every day is a great day to be a Tar Heel!
