Omarion Hampton will be off to the NFL next season. No matter what.

But there's a measure of optimism about what comes next after Davion Gause's performance against Charlotte.

Nick went into the particulars of Gause's breakout game against the 49ers yesterday, so let's talk about what this means for the future. Chip Lindsey's offensive game plan calls for a downhill running style, and he appears to have a preferred type of running back. He likes a big, strong warhorse type.

Hampton is 6-foot, 220 lbs. Grad Transfer Darwin Barlow (who was out for the Charlotte game) is the same. Freshman Davion Gause is 5'11", 215 lbs. If you want to play running back for the Tar Heels in the near future, you'd better eat your steak and drink your milk because Mack Brown and Chip Lindsey want you THICC!

Gause actually showed some of the same issues that Hampton did as a freshman. He has some timing issues (hitting the hole versus letting blocks develop) that will get sorted out as he gains experience. He caught his only target for a five-yard gain, so we'll see in the future is he's a useful tool for passes out of the backfield.

Hampton leaving after this season is the right call for his long-term career, but Tar Heel fans shouldn't fear what comes next the way we did after Drake Maye left. Gause looks like he has the tools to take the mantle.
