Alex Payne is a four-star offensive lineman out of Gainesville high school in Gainesville, Georgia. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound held offers from Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Georgia among others. Payne announced his commitment to the UNC football program on Wednesday morning.

Payne is the fifth commit in the 2025 class for the UNC football program. He is the second four-star in the class, joining quarterback Bryce Baker out of Kernersville, North Carolina. The UNC football program has two commitments up front with Alex Payne and three-star recruit Trey Blue who is also out of North Carolina.

Offensive line depth is a huge area of concern for the UNC football program, especially heading into the 2024 season. The Tar Heels lost a lot of depth at this position, including four starters, as Mack Brown and company look to reshape the offensive line for years to come.

The Tar Heels are building a recruiting class to compete in the ACC for years to come. Their 2024 class is strong with high school recruits and players from the transfer portal. North Carolina has the 30th overall class in 2024 and the 48th ranked transfer portal class in the country. The team will try to build off of a 8-5 finish to the 2023 season.
