Former UNC football standout Andre Smith was released by the Denver Broncos before the deadline for NFL teams to get their roster to 53 players.

The journeyman linebacker, who began his NFL career in Charlotte with the Carolina Panthers before moving on to Buffalo, Tennessee, and Atlanta, signed with Denver in June 2024 but didn't make the 53-man roster. Andre Smith was more than likely going to be a special teams ace, but the Broncos will use that roster spot for a younger talent.

Last season, Smith played for the Atlanta Falcons, making 11 appearances and tallying 19 total tackles. Let's hope the former Tar Heel can find a landing spot with another team's practice squad and can work his way up to the main roster once the season gets rolling.

Teams across the NFL had to make some difficult decisions this week as they got their initial 53-man rosters put into place. Some former Tar Heels (such as Smith) were impacted by the roster crunches, but the hope is that he'll quickly find another landing spot to continue his NFL career.
