Bill Belichick didn't hold back in his evaluation of Drake Maye

Future Hall of Fame and former New England Patriot coach has experience letting young quarterbacks learn as backups before they hit the field.
Belichick believes giving Drake Maye more time before starting in the National Football League would be a good idea. After watching preseason action, Belichick stated on the COACH that there are a couple of skills Maye needs to work on and learn.
Some of the things Belichick believes Maye needs to work on include reading coverages and overall throwing mechanics while being more consistent. Belichick talked about how he likes Drake Maye's size and arm but believes that Maye's inexperience could be a problem.
"You like his size and you like his arm. I think his inexperience really showed up in the preseason as it did a little bit at North Carolina. I think that he needs a lot of seasoning in terms of reading coverages, overall throwing mechanics and consistency.
Is he a big, fast athlete? Yeah. But I think it's going to take more than that to play quarterback in the National Football League."
As expected, the New England Patriots decided to start Jacoby Brissett in Week 1 vs the Cincinnati Bengals. During the interview, Belichick and Michael Lombardi discussed that players, such as Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, also began their NFL careers as backups.
On the other hand, Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning were day-one starters and had horrible rookie seasons. There is no right recipe for young quarterback success, but it depends on the player and the development the respective franchise puts together to help them ultimately succeed.
The Patriots selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft as the franchise's future. Is Belichick a bit sour with his former employer, or does the long-term head coach have a legitimate reason to question if Maye can be a successful NFL quarterback?
