There isn’t a single player’s development more important than Jalen Washington’s. The Tar Heels are loaded in the backcourt, boasting potentially the best 1-3 group in the nation. The 4 and 5 spots, however, are more of a wildcard.

After losing the cornerstone of their frontcourt in Armando Bacot, the Tar Heels need someone to step up and take the reins. And if anyone is primed for a breakout season, it’s Washington. He’s got two seasons under his belt, knows the system and has been the man backing up Bacot. Now the torch has been passed, and it’s Washington’s turn to lead the front court.

Washington has a silky smooth offensive game. There aren’t many 6-foot-10 players that have the skillset and pure shotmaking ability of Washington. But Washington needs to make a leap in the physical side of the game. He needs to pack on some muscle to hold his own defending the post.

Strength will anchor Washington’s defensive game and open up his offensive game, allowing him to back down opponents and create kick-out opportunities for teammates. Washington played just 8.4 minutes per game last season. He’ll be taking a big jump in playing time, so his endurance and durability will be vital as well.

In a recent interview with Inside Carolina's Sherrell McMillan, Washington spoke on what he's looking to prove this season:

“I’m driven to prove that I can be that No. 1 option. I want to prove I’m the guy they should rock with.”
