Omarion Hampton named a finalist for the 2024 Doak Walker Award
By JT Zangara
For the second year in a row, North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton has been named a finalist for the Doak Walker Award.
The junior running back picked up right where he left off last season and is getting national recognition. Last year Hampton finished behind Ollie Gordon II in the Doak Walker vote. This year, Hampton is one of three finalists for this award, joining Boise State's Ashton Gentry and Iowa's Kaleb Johnson.
Omarion Hampton has been on a tear for the UNC football program this season. Hampton has totaled 259 carries for 1,475 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. This sets a career-high for carries, and he is on pace to pass his career-season rushing yards and touchdowns. Hampton has also been affected in the receiving game this season, with 34 catches for 295 yards. Omarion Hampton has rushed for over 100 yards in nine of eleven games this season, including two with 200+ yards. He has also had four games with multiple rushing touchdowns this season.
Hampton can move his way up the UNC football running back records. He currently sits fifth all-time in total rushing yards for North Carolina football at 3,380. Hampton is also third all-time in total rushing touchdowns with 35. Omarion Hampton has been the leader of this Tar Heel offense this season and will continue to impress college football fans. I expect Hampton to be a finalist for more national and ACC awards for the 2024-25 season.
