The UNC football program has grabbed another piece out of the transfer portal. This time, it's a flipped commitment! Former East Carolina defensive tackle CJ Mims, who had previously committed to Wake Forest, but de-committed after the retirement of head coach Dave Clawson, has now pledged his future to Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels.
Mims is a 6-foot-2, 305 pound defensive tackle from West Craven High School in Vanceboro, North Carolina. He spent his first three years playing for the Pirates, accumulating 37 tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Mims picked a tremendously opportunistic time to come to Chapel Hill. Through graduation, the defensive line depth has been decimated, and he will have every opportunity to win as many snaps as he can handle, provided he rises above the competition that will be making its way to UNC. Bill Belichick has already secured a commitment from Delaware defensive lineman Melkart Abou Jaoude.
Expect more commitments to follow, particularly once teams in the college football playoffs start getting eliminated, and the top tier talents becomes available.
