With Aug. 29 around the corner, the excitement and focus for UNC football and Bill Belichick should be on the season-opener against TCU. Instead, off-field drama is once again surrounding the program, with general manager Mike Lombardi now at the center of things. You've simply got to be kidding.
In case you missed it, Lombardi, the highest-paid general manager in college football, has been placed on administrative leave by the university. According to Pete Thamel, this was due to a complaint filed by a former UNC employee to the HR department. Per Thamel, the investigation is ongoing, but nevertheless, this is another rough look for the program under Belichick's watch.

Bill Belichick's time running UNC football has been nothing short of a disaster
When is this nonsense going to end? Instead of Carolina fans being excited for fall camp to get here, this is more drama for everyone to worry about. With Lombardi making $1.5 million per year too, you'd think he'd be helping land big-name recruits and building towards the future. That's not the case right now, and with his future now unknown, you better believe that other programs will be working to flip 2027 UNC commits.
However, it's not like UNC's '27 class has been filled with superstar talent or major recruiting wins. The class is currently ranked No. 50 in the country by 247Sports, with 17 pledges. Of those 17 commits, there's one four-star prospect and 16 three-star recruits. That's not the kind of recruiting success people envisioned with Belichick and Lombardi at the helm.
Add in the fact that North Carolina went 4-8 last season, and 2-6 in conference play, and it makes things even worse. At ACC Media Days, Belichick had his usual calm demeanor, but he also made it seem like the Tar Heels were ready to make a nice jump in 2026. Belichick and Lombardi were working hard in landing over 40 high school prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, while also bringing in some studs via the transfer portal.
Despite that, there appears to be way more hype surrounding the job Michael Malone is doing for UNC basketball over what Belichick and his staff are getting ready to accomplish on the gridiron. And that's with the matchup with TCU sneaking up on everyone. This is not where people thought the state of the program would be with Belichick in charge ahead of his second season in Chapel Hill.

That's a lot in 18 months.
More details are sure to come from this Lombardi situation, but again, his future on campus now appears to be a bit up in the air. After Belichick broke the bank to bring him in as GM, it's another black eye for UNC under the iconic coach's watch. At which point will enough be enough, though?
Belichick will go down as one of the best coaches in football history, with his eight total Super Bowl rings being incredible. His move to the college ranks has been a disaster, with more headlines being written about his relationship with Jordon Hudson than positives on the field also being frustrating. Who knows what will happen with Lombardi, but this is all on Belichick. Should another four-win season arrive, or even 5/6 wins, it will be time to have a serious conversation about moving on. Heck, it even feels like hiring him in the first place was a major mistake, and if we had a time machine we would have urged the university to never let the hire happen in the first place.
