Lessons Learned from UNC football's impotent loss to Wake Forest

Offense was never going to be North Carolina's calling card this season, but this was awful.

Kick in the nuts

Marshall transfer place kicker Rece Verhoff has quietly had a really solid season for North Carolina. The senior from Columbus Grove, Ohio, was a perfect 17 of 17 for PATs, and a very respectable 12 for 14 from field goals this season. Due to UNC's misfiring offense that was unable to move the ball quickly with 1:47 left in the first half, Verhoff attempted (and made!) the longest field goal in school history.

Verhoff juuuust got the ball over the crossbar, like how I juuuust graduated from UNC in 2005. But hey, three points is three points, just like my degree is a degree. We'll choose the skip over the two field goals that were blocked, because they were immaterial to the outcome of the game anyway.

If North Carolina's offense had a pulse, Verhoff is the type of kicker who could be counted on to make 50-yard and under kicks consistently to keep Tar Heel drives from sputtering without reward. Unfortunately, he'll just pile up stats to no end, as UNC drifts towards a December without a postseason. At least he'll have plenty of time to study for exams.
