Wake Forest cuts off Caleb Wilson's supply in second half
As he often does, Caleb Wilson wreaked havoc on Wake Forest during the first half. He scored 17 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting effort from the floor (3-for-4 from the line), and gobbled up nine rebounds (three offensive, and two that led to dunks). He was overwhelming the Deacons, who could not stop him one-on-one, in a zone, in the air, on land, or at sea. Caleb got whatever he wanted and was playing with a beaming smile on his face.
Witness the devastation:
In the second half, it got a bit harder. Wake Forest was able to help, deny, and otherwise frustrate the freshman superstar, and Henri Veesaar did the heavy lifting, scoring 14 of his 25 points in the last 20 minutes of the game. Hubert Davis is lucky to have two productive big men, but what he needs now is more production from his starting backcourt.
Until his fast break dunk with 2:59 left in the game, Seth Trimble only had four points. Kyan Evans only made one of his six three-point attempts, and he only shot from downtown. Jarin Stevenson was a non-factor on offense again, though hit two clutch free throws in the game's dying moments. And Luka Bogavac did not respond well to being dropped from the starting line-up, failing to score in just nine minutes of action.
If this is the support that Veesaar and Wilson receive, teams will cheat off the perimeter and swarm the big men. They cannot hold the entire load on their own. Hubert Davis must get better production from his backcourt.
