Strange Free Throw Stat
North Carolina was at one point 12/12 from the free-throw line early in the second half. Derek Dixon missed UNC's first free throw of the game with 16:02 left to play. After that miss, the Tar Heels would miss seven of ten free throws.
That's kind of crazy given how well they were shooting earlier in the game.
In a 20-point win, that kind of dramatic drop off isn't too worrisome, but imagine the hand-wringing we'd be going through if the game was a one-possession affair? Those free throws were a springwell of points that UNC used to make up for the lack of transition baskets that Georgetown were determined to stop, to the point of not aggressively going to the boards for their own misses. Instead, they'd rush back to set up their 1-3-1 and 2-3 zone mixes.
UNC used its size to its advantage, getting to the charity stripe nine more times than the Hoyas. Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar combined for 13 free throws, one more than Georgetown's entire team. This is something you can see North Carolina doing for the rest of the season, but you'd like to see them steadily shoot 80% throughout the game. If this fall-off happened during a tight game, the mental effect on the entire team's performance could be disastrous.
