Lessons Learned from the UNC basketball program's exhibition win at Memphis
Good result, good mistakes to fix
This was an exhibition game. It doesn't count.
With that in mind, Hubert Davis will be pleased that his Tar Heels were able to rally from a double-digit deficit to take a double-digit lead before holding on from a last-minute Memphis blitz to win the game.
Seth Trimble had an ugly offensive foul late in the game to turn the ball over, and Memphis had two steals from errant Cadeau passes that turned into four points with less than two minutes to go.
You love to see these types of mistakes in early October rather than late March. Hubert Davis can correct these mistakes in the film room and the team can incorporate those corrections in practice and some of its earlier and "easier" games, though that November 8 game at Allen Fieldhouse looms eerily.
In addition to cleaning up its situational play, North Carolina will need to calm down its young puppies. Five-star freshmen Ian Jackson and Drake Powell had some rough early minutes. We've seen footage of both looking a lot smoother at the Dean Dome, so better days are ahead, but both players got a taste of high-level basketball and will have some clear instructions on what to improve.
