I was at Lahaina Civic Center last night. I watched this man go to work against North Carolina. I saw the team struggle to contain him. Johni Broome was the best player on the floor, and the second best was a distant second.

He was getting anything he wanted in the post. He hit threes. The threat of his threes forced help defenders to leave their men wide open for him, breaking UNC's defense apart as Auburn zipped the ball around the perimeter. He anchored their defense. When the Tar Heels went on an 11-0 run in the first half, it was when Broome was on the bench.

Broome finished the night with an astonishing 23 points, 19 (NINETEEN!!!) rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. He was a one-man wrecking crew. And he's exactly the type of difference maker Hubert Davis needs to bring to Chapel Hill next season.

Development of the recruited players should continue, obviously. They are the beating heart of the program. But if North Carolina is going to compete for a national championship, it will need a dominant post. The Tar Heels have literally never won a title without one.
