Lessons Learned from the UNC basketball program's assured win over Florida State

The Tar Heels were in firm control in Tallahassee, and continue to control their fate.

Cade Tyson's season hasn't gone the way that he or Tar Heel Nation would have hoped when he transferred to Carolina from Belmont. But in the four-game winning streak, Hubert Davis has been giving Tyson more minutes, and he's rewarded the UNC basketball program for that faith.

In the homestand against NC State and Virginia, Tyson has hit 3/4 threes, taking advantage of the space given to him by opposing defenses. At Florida State, his minutes exploded to 14, and he got more involved than just hovering in the corners. When his first two three-pointers did not go down, Tyson didn't hang his head. He got his nose dirty.

He had two rebounds that turned into putbacks, and then sidestepped a sprawling defender for a three that would have been, were it not for his tippy-toe on the line. Tyson's four rebounds were an ACC-season high, and he got a fabulous tipout right into the hands of a streaking Seth Trimble, who got an And-1 on the play. It didn't count as an assist, but I would've credited him with one on that very heads up play.

With Jae'Lyn Withers and Cade Tyson suddenly bumping up their three-point percentages, teams may have to guard more honestly, which should give smaller players like Davis, Cadeau, Trimble, and Jackson the room to get to the rim without someone blocking them from behind. Only good things will come from Tyson giving Hubert Davis more productive minutes.
