Guards on Parade

North Carolina had a really balanced attack, beating up San Diego State from every position on the floor, but special attention should be paid to the guards. It was the most complete performance from Hubert Davis's Big Three.
Elliot Cadeau showed us what his game can look like when he's not monitoring his fouls. He was calm and assured, despite SDSU disrupting UNC's offense in the first several possessions with deflections that led to steals. Cadeau's steady hand put the offense in fourth gear quickly, dishing out eight first half assists en route to a game-high 12 against just two turnovers. He also added nine points on 4/5 shooting.
Seth Trimble was a defensive terror, bodying up a physical Aztec backcourt, while pitching in 16 points, including a 6/6 performance from the free throw line.
But the highest praise needs to be reserved for RJ Davis. UNC's talisman was on another level in Dayton, scoring 26 points on 8/12 shooting, including a perfect 6/6 from downtown. SDSU didn't know what to do with him, unable to muscle him off the bounce, and incapable of corralling him along the perimeter.
Guards help you win in March. RJ Davis didn't have a follow-on season to his ACC player of the year campaign like many hoped he would. But if he's this hot for the rest of the tournament, UNC will have a fighting chance in any game they play from here on out.
