Dontrez Styles is the first Tar Heel to depart the UNC basketball program in the transfer portal, and defect to NC State. The Kinston, NC native was a rarely used substitute during his freshman year when Hubert Davis reverted to his "Iron Five" to close the season, and eventually transferred to Georgetown after his sophomore season seeking more opportunities.

I can certainly empathize with Styles after his minutes went down in his sophomore year in a season where UNC did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament. But after a breakout season at Georgetown, you'd expect him to stay with the Hoyas. Why come to moribound NC State? Homesickness?

If that's the case, how much better would UNC and Styles be if they never separated? UNC's post depth has been bemoaned in these (web)pages more than I care to count, and at least Styles's teammates have the memory of last season's miraculous ACC Tournament win and Final Four berth. Styles just joined a typical loser NC State team.

Styles had a tidy box score with 18 points on 7/10 shooting (3/4 from three) in the losing effort. But wouldn't you rather have more moments like this:

... than this?
