Is the UNC basketball program turning a corner after a tough non-conference showing?

The season began with slow starts, but it seems like UNC is flipping a page after three straight victories.

Down by 10.

The UNC basketball program found itself down by double-digits numerous times throughout the non-conference schedule. It seemed like each game featured a slow start — turning into a deficit at halftime. In some instances, but not many, North Carolina was able to dig out of those holes.

In its matchup against Dayton in the opening round of the Maui Invitational, the Tar Heels were down by as many as 18 points after 20 minutes of play. But a spark ignited head coach Hubert Davis' run and led to a 59-point outburst in the second half en route to a final score of 92-90.

For what it's worth, North Carolina stormed all the way back on the road against Kansas during Week 1 of the season. Despite the loss, overcoming a 20-point lead is not an easy thing to do.

After 16 games, UNC has trailed in eight of them entering the locker room.

Fortunately, Davis has seen a change in his team — the slow starts are no more and there is a groove at the beginning of games. And the difference maker? One too many.

There is not a specific player to point towards, and surprising to say, considering freshman Ian Jackson's terrific performance as of late. But junior center Jalen Washington, sophomore point guard Elliot Cadeau, and freshman wing Drake Powell have made strides in their game.

Cadeau's marvelous four-point play in Indiana against Notre Dame lifted UNC — saving the hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth. Against SMU, the Heels found themselves up by a favorable margin of 15 points — sealing the deal 82-67 inside the Dean Dome. Powell caught fire from the three-point line — shooting 3-4 while ending with 14 points in the first half.

Washington's performance against NC State was arguably the best game of his collegiate career — a double-double recording 11 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks.

Over UNC's winning streak, Washington has blocked 12 shots — serving as the rim-protector presence needed all season long. Ever since his defense improved, Carolina's play has shifted upwards.

Trimble is two games in from his injury — now coming off the bench. His defensive ability and athleticism have served problems for opposing teams, per usual. He will continue to receive his minutes despite not being on the floor at tip-off — his slashing playstyle gives UNC a fascinating dynamic.

All things considered, the pieces are moving in the right direction for Davis' squad. But there will always be room to grow. North Carolina looks to have found something to hang its hat on that does not result in being down by 10.
