Once a part of the Carolina family, always a part of the Carolina family.
This mantra rings true for Adrian Walters — former UNC women’s basketball assistant coach — as he begins the next chapter of his career as the associate head coach for Texas Tech women’s basketball.
Walters coached under head coach Courtney Banghart each of his five seasons at Chapel Hill. Walters put together an impressive tenure at UNC, and the Tar Heels were consistent, making March Madness in all five seasons.
In 2021, UNC was a No. 10 seed, losing in the Round of 64. In 2022, UNC was a No. 5 seed, going on a run and making the Sweet 16. The Tar Heels put up a valiant fight, only losing by eight to overall No. 1 seed and eventual champions South Carolina. In 2023, UNC was a No. 6 seed, making the Round of 32. In 2024, UNC was a No. 8 seed, making the Round of 32. And finally in 2025, UNC had their most successful season with Walters on the staff. The Tar Heels finished fifth in a loaded ACC, making it to the ACC Tournament semifinals. North Carolina earned a No. 3 seed in March Madness and made it to the Sweet 16.
It’s encouraging seeing Walters end his tenure at UNC on a high note. North Carolina women’s basketball accomplished a whole lot during the 2024-2025 season. That was a special group from top to bottom, including the players and coaches, like Walters. No part is greater than the whole in sports, and Walters was a very important part of UNC’s success these past five seasons.
You don’t need to look far to see what a high-character man or high-caliber coach Walters is. He has already received a warm embrace from the Texas Tech Red Raiders community. Based on an interview with women’s basketball head coach Krista Gerlich, it’s safe to say the Lady Raiders couldn’t be happier to have Walters on their staff.
"We are thrilled to welcome Adrian Walters as our new associate head coach at Texas Tech. His coaching experience is exceptional, and he's been instrumental in helping his teams advance deep in the NCAA tourney," Gerlich said. "His dedication to recruiting and player development will be invaluable as we continue to strive for excellence. Adrian's passion for the game and commitment to our athletes will undoubtedly elevate our program to new heights."
Tar Heel Nation has plenty to thank Coach Walters for and wishes him the best of luck in his next chapter.
