Wilson's commitment to North Carolina has been a bright spot despite the results falling short of expectations. When the Atlanta, Georgia native announced his future plans will involve Chapel Hill — fans were ecstatic and excited for what's to come.
The 6-foot-9, 205 pound forward will be slotted into Hubert Davis' frontcourt next season, alongside whoever the coaching staff lands in the transfer portal as well as retains after the conclusion of the current campaign.
In his final year of high school hoops, Wilson averaged 21.2 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while averaging 24.9 minutes of action and shooting 56% from the field, per MaxPreps. He also added 2.1 steals and 3.6 blocks too.
Besides Wilson, the incoming recruiting class will feature guards Isaiah Denis and Derek Dixon. The departure of fifth-year seniors RJ Davis, Jae'Lyn Withers, and Ty Claude, and unknown decisions of freshmen Ian Jackson along with Drake Powell will leave new General Manager Jim Tanner busy during the offseason.
Who knows what could happen?
For now, the Carolina is on its last chance to make an NCAA Tournament push with the ACC tourney in its hands. The chances of joining the big dance are not large, but certainly not zero.
It is survive and advance time, as some may like to call it.
The offseason will be a very busy one for the UNC basketball program, but it's assuring to know that they have a top-flight talent in Caleb Wilson set to join the roster. While there's plenty of uncertainty around the rest of the roster, it's safe to say the Tar Heels will do everything in their power to put the best roster possible around their star incoming freshman.
