If you're feeling a bit frustrated with how things are going for UNC football and Bill Belichick to start the week, we don't blame you. First, it was announced that the Tar Heels are closing in on Bobby Petrino to be the new offensive coordinator. You've got to be kidding.
UNC football fumbles its opportunity with prized freshman Bryce Baker
Then, news broke that elite quarterback prospect Bryce Baker will be off to the transfer portal. Come on. Belichick is cooking up something in Chapel Hill that fans don't like. In terms of the OC, North Carolina was reportedly down to Chip Kelly and Petrino. From our chair, Belichick needs to avoid Petrino at all costs and go with Kelly instead. If the door is open for a late change, UNC should make it:
There's no question that Bobby Petrino is an excellent offensive mind.

If he can avoid any off-the-field antics, this could be a great hire.
However, it's a considerable risk for the UNC football program, one that doesn't need any more negative attention.
UNC football fans are not happy with Bobby Petrino being linked to the OC job
With all due respect, Petrino? His controversial past is the last thing this program needs and he doesn't quite inject a ton of excitement for people worried about the offense come 2026. That won't be the case if Kelly gets the call instead.
Despite being fired by the Las Vegas Raiders, keep in mind that Kelly played a massive role in helping Ohio State win the National Championship Game last season. Kelly was able to get the offense humming early in the year and the Buckeyes never slowed down.
While his time in Sin City didn't go according to plan, that doesn't take away from the fact that he's viewed as an offensive genius - he could make a real difference in the ACC for the Heels. Instead, people now have to potentially see what Petrino is going to be able to get done? Nope, can't happen.
Belichick took a chance by giving Freddie Kitchens the OC job for 2025, and that decision proved to be a disaster. Is the same going to be said about Belichick's call to bring in Petrino to try and revive that side of the ball if he's hired? UNC supporters are not feeling optimistic about that. It just feels like the clown show led by Belichick is continuing. This is going to prove to be a mistake if Petrino is his guy. Don't do it, Bill. Go with Kelly instead.
